For years I have admired the American artist, Malcolm Liepke. His subject matter of barroom people and their rather sour facial expressions (obviously after one too many drinks) is such unique subject matter and his renderings so typically alive that you almost feel as if you are socializing with them.
But the best part of his paintings are the fabrics he incorporates in his scenes. His patterns are so appealing to me, that in "Ready for a Nap" I tried to achieve the same effect… one pattern on the bed, one on her stockings, another on her dress, and one on the pillow… plus the model not in the middle of the painting as expected, but way too high. Just to surprise the viewer.
