When I studied from the Chatov’s, we always started out a painting with a drawing in yellow ochre. The yellow ochre is great because it is not too dark and you can make easy corrections and then go darker with color when the composition is right. Sometimes the painting sings with just the drawing done this way. This was of Kathryn, one of my favorite models.
