I have designed a lot of gardens over the years and I realized early on how important axis points are in the design. They divide the space, create focal points and achieve some kind of structure to the overall plan.
In this painting, the garden path gives structure and form to the painting and it leads the eye to a focal point… the garden cottage. Without it, it would be just a mess of flowers. The afternoon sun is just the icing on the cake.
