After studying portraiture for three years, I applied the same principles to interiors. Much to my surprise, my interiors were an instant success. The fact that (as far as I know) no other American artists were painting interiors at the time made me realize that I was onto something unique.
I’ve always enjoyed walking into old rooms with lots of character: European-style romantic rooms filled with chintz-covered chairs; books stacked on the floor or open on the table; figures reclining, dressing or reading; cats napping. The inviting glow of a warm lamp or the strong rays of the sun slanting into the room, especially entice me. Often I depict one room leading to another, one in shadow, one in bright sunlight. Strong contrast and light can create beautiful chiaroscuro, and beautiful chiaroscuro can make a good painting exquisite.
I invite you into my paintings, to feel enveloped by welcoming comfort, to relish the sensation of sinking into an overstuffed chair or tousled bed, or to take a seat in our dining room with its warm red walls covered with paintings. It is important to me that I share with the viewer how I perceive all this and, as well, the effect golden sunlight has on my day-to-day surroundings.
