Here in our home in Provence, in the evenings when we watch the news, this painting hangs right below the TV. So, as you can imagine, I spend a lot of time studying it.
It was painted on site standing in Caline’s living room looking out on her intense violet blue mountain background with the knurly, twisted French pines trees that grow despite the heat there.
It is one of my favorites, maybe because of where it was painted (one of my favorite places in the world), or because it doesn’t have a focal point (except for the slash of red lining one of the trees), and yet, somehow, it seems to function to me. Whatever. I enjoy this painting every day.
