One summer I painted something similar standing on the busy highway that weaves its way through Marseille right on the edge of those fabulously bleached white rocks and the oh, so blue Mediterranean sea. I was standing on a narrow sidewalk with my art box perched on said rocks looking out over a popular inlet where the French come to sun themselves and swim in the deep blue. What a scene. All sorts of people sunbathing and swimming in the water. What a lot of fun in the sun.
This painting was inspired by last year’s experience and I concentrated on all the sunbathers on the beach and in the water. And a few umbrellas.
