When we came over in 2012, we rented a sweet apartment in Lourmarin which happened to be across the street from one Bernadette and her charming five bedroom Chambre d’Hote.
Featured in many European magazines, it is a treasure trove of beautiful French antiques, arched stucco ceilings and charming verandas. Bernadette, then, a young seventy-eight, was (and still is) quite a lady. As time went by and our friendship ripened, she would take me on guided tours of the countryside as we scooted around on our electric bikes.
Her graciousness to me is and was exceptional in so many ways. On numerous occasions she allowed me to bring all my paint paraphernalia over and record the beautiful rooms of her villa… her charming bedroom wallpapered with fabulous fabric from Paris, the sun-dappled terrace with its large pots of oak leafed hydrangeas throwing shadows, and her elegant salle de sejour.
